Antique German Beer Stein

This item has been in my family lonter than I have, and I'm rapidly approaching 63 y/o.

At some point it had been converted into a lamp, so there's a small hole at the bottom, and I assume there must have been some kind of decorative piece on the lid, which is no longer present.   Also, it looks to me as if the lever that raises the metal lid might have been longer and have broken off, but I can't be certain.

It's marked "8L", but by my reckoning, it does not appear as if it would hold 8 litres ....
