Antique Locking Basket / Pocket Book Made Of Wood

Profile picture for user CallBob
By CallBob, 4 December, 2009
Description

Top seems to be 1 piece Walnut with 2 metal straps nailed on to prevent a crack from spreading . Also try to notice that it has 2 ornamental pieces attached on the bottom of the lid toward the end that are raised up as they meet at the lip of the lid and will slide underneath a space in the piece to secure them firmly to it . At this point notice that an ornamental piece is attached to the top of the lid with a lock hole it meant to lock the lid down to the piece at this point .The locking mechanism is missing , but i can see that it was an oval shape with 2 squat leg shapes , with a square mechanism attached to it that held the lock itself .The outside sides and bottom are a woven material that i can only conclude is some type of straw ? The interior is lined with canvas as shown and the handle seems to be leather covered bentwood , The bottom fancy work is made of what feels like leather and there are large iron fancy bolts protruding through the handle to secure it to the piece .
