I recently received these family heirlooms of completed powder horn flasks, extra horns, a leather bag and an implement tool kit. My father received these from his father and stated that these have been handed down from generation to generation - up to four generations (including me) that he is aware of. Based on my father's information we are dating the flasks as pre-Civil War. The date of 1890 is for the Implement Set as that is shown on the still-intact box. My ancestors are from Pennsylvania.
The collection includes:
- 3 completed powder horn flasks
- 2 horns that were started with holes drilled; one of these horns has a wood cap on the end
- 7 cow / bull horns with nothing started
- 1 handcrafted leather bag
- 1 Implement Set; No. 99.; Gauge.; Manufactured by the Elm City Mfg. Co., New Haven, Conn.; Under Patent February 25th, 1890. The box contains various small tools and 9 small tin containers of primers / percussion caps (from various manufacturers such as Hicks, J. Goldmarks, United Metallic Company). Several of the tins have the words "Winchester Repeating Arms". I cannot find any information on this No. 99 kit or the Elm City Manufacturing Company. I am unsure which tools came with the Implement Set and which were added over time by each kit owner. A couple of the tools that I believe I have identified are a round ball mold, a roll crimper, a black powder measuring device and an awl. Several of the other tools are unidentified with unknown purposes.
I am curious about the value of the collection. Any information you can provide would be appreciated! I would be interested in selling to the right collector under circumstances favorable to each of us. This collection deserves a proper display for others to enjoy the history and craftsmanship.
Thank you!
Jonathan
