Antique Secretary Hutch

By cweeksnyc, 13 January, 2019
Description

Hello! This secretary was passed down to me through distant family, so I have no idea where it originally came from. There are no company markings on it, but on the bottom of one drawer is written "6/19-29" and there are also written initials - maybe "SM" (see photo)? And on the back of the piece, the number "16" is carved (see photo). It has two movable shelves in the hutch. There are two skeleton keys - one for the hutch and one for the desk. The desk portion has a small drawer, with a brass looking drawer pull on it, and the number 16 is hand-written on the bottom of that small drawer. The desk has several compartments. There are two large drawers in the bottom of the piece, with wooden knobs. I have no experience with antiques so am looking for some help in valuing this piece. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is but a friend told me it's likely cherry, maple or mahogany, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts in terms of time period, style and value would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Re: Antique Secretary Hutch

Your cabinet is in the "Colonial Revival Style" and dates to the second quarter of the 20th Century. Pieces like this look far older than they really are becuase they were designed to resemble Early American furniture. The style was very popular and just about every major furniture manufacturer in the USA produced a line of it until World War Two. We'd retail a comparable in the $400.00- $600.00 range.
