Beautiful American Quarter Sawn Golden Oak, also referred to as "Tiger Oak" roll top desk. Late 1880's or early 1900's manufactured by Standard Furniture Company.
The quarter sawn oak on this desk is absolutely stunning. The desk was purchased by my father in the mid-1980's and was completely, professionally, extensively and expensively restored in the mid-1990's. It has been cared for since restoration and always housed in a home environment, where it was climate controlled. It has never seen business use, or cold storage to the best of our knowledge. I was given the desk by my father prior to his passing.
The desk is 100% complete including all pulls, handles, drawer dividers and even the keys to the locks. Full Disclosure: to be completely accurate, the roll top lock is not the original 19th century lock, but a newer Yale lock was installed into the original Standard mechanism and bezel. See photos for detail. Center drawer and roll top cubby hole door are both the original Standard locks.
The style of this desk has been described as both "Americana" and "Mission, Arts & Craft". It was first introduced into the U.S. by the Standard Furniture Company in 1886.
The antique oak roll top desk measures 49 3/4" wide by 33 1/2" deep by 43 1/2" high including the 13" high roll top unit. The Knee hole is 18 1/2" wide by 25 1/2" high. The roll top of the desk has 3 center, open, cubby hole slots, 4 letter/envelope "scoops", 2 flat drawers and 1 locking 6" wide by 4" high compartment door. The bottom desk section has six drawers total. The left pedestal has three 5" tall drawers complete with original wood dividers. The right pedestal has a lower file drawer with the original drawer divider and a spring loaded tensioner to keep files upright. That pedestal also has an upper 5" drawer with original wood dividers. All of the pulls and handles on this desk are the original "Tiger Oak" wood. The roll top works smoothly. The sides and back have recessed panels. The grain of this oak is beautiful. The deep drawers are all assembled with craftman dovetail joinery.
Although this desk can be transported by truck as two units, the dowel mounted roll top unit and the very heavy desk unit, it can also be disassembled for heavy but easier moving, pick up, shipping and delivery. The total shipped items would entail 9 separately boxed/shipped pieces but re-assembly is accomplished with one flat blade screwdriver.
The chair has the original style casters but with non-original plastic wheels to keep from tracking on carpet or scarring wood floors. The cast metal screw pole type height adjustment and adjustable spring tension rocking mechanism are all original. Chair is not marked as to manufacturer and therefore we do not claim it to be a Standard Furniture Company chair.
