Antique Tiger Oak Bed

By Tonda Powell, 21 June, 2011
Description

This bed consists of a full size headboard, footboard, rails, and wooden slats.  It has the all four of the original brass casters.  It is made of Tiger Oak with Burl Wood panel inserts.  The headboard and footboard panels have a Burl Wood panel insert in contrasting detailed pattern of the surrounding Tiger Oak wood. I am not sure of the style since I have seen similar early American pieces called Amish, Shaker, or Mission style, yet this piece was made in England, according to the markings. The markings on the brass casters bear the following words:  Shepherd Patent, Archibald Kendrick (Kenrick) & Sons, Ltd., Made In England.  In addition, casters on the headboard bear a capital R, while casters on the footboard have a capital L.  There is a mark on the underneath side of the headboard which reads F181.  This bed was given to me as a gift from my mother who had originally purchased it from an antique store.  The bed has no cracks or major scars or blemishes--just normal wear as an antique item of furniture.  The style has an almost modern feel, with no high back or elaborate carving.  The size will fit in a normal size bedroom space.  The bed is stunning with the contrasting detailed wood work, making it very striking yet also simple in styling.
