Description
Chair is sturdy with plain back legs and turned front legs. Front legs have wheels. Carved top has burlwood in the oval and curved rectangle areas. Upholstery seems to be velvet, Might be original. I have no idea of age or origin. Can anyone clue me in?
Re: arm chair possibly called draycott?
From the images you have provided, your chair is a Late Victorian Eastlake style example. the style getting its name from Charles Eastlake, who wrote a book entitled "Hints on Household Taste" in 1868. In this influential book he rejected the ornate decorations favored on earlier Victorian furniture and espoused simpler more incised rectangular lines sparingly accented with machined forms and varying wood types for decoration. The majority of Eastlake furniture was constructed of walnut, with later pieces being made of lighter colored hardwoods such a oak, maple and ash. Values are currently in decline for Victorian furniture, comparable chairs sell at auction for under $150.00.
