Antique Bronze Bell

Material: Likely bronze (based on visible patina and corrosion)
Dimensions: ~9" tall x 12" wide
Weight: 34.7 lbs
Condition: Fair, with visible corrosion and natural patina
Distinguishing Features:

  • Strong green patina (verdigris), typical of aged bronze
  • Raised relief decoration including floral banding and radial scoring
  • Central religious imagery, possibly of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus or a lamb
  • Sturdy top-mounted crown/loop for suspension

Historical Context

This bell appears to be ecclesiastical in nature, likely used in a church or mission setting. The iconography suggests Christian use, possibly Catholic, and its design is reminiscent of 17th to 19th century European or Latin American mission bells. The craftsmanship and material suggest it was cast by traditional sand-casting techniques used for large bronze bells.

The lack of a visible foundry mark or inscription may indicate it was commissioned locally or from a small foundry. The deep relief and balance of ornamentation suggest it was a significant object of utility and ceremonial importance.

Authentication

While a visual inspection strongly supports the bell being hand-cast bronze and antique, a few steps can help authenticate it further:

  • XRF testing for metal content to confirm true bronze
  • Provenance search or expert review to verify religious imagery
  • Acoustic test — many older bronze bells produce a distinct, resonant tone that helps date them
  • Close inspection for faint inscriptions, especially in recessed or oxidized areas

Value Estimate

Given its size, condition, iconography, and material:

  • Retail/Insurance value: $1,200–$2,500 (USD)
  • Auction estimate: $700–$1,400 depending on interest and venue
  • Restored condition: Could potentially reach higher if cleaned conservatively and authenticated

Recommendation

I strongly recommend a professional appraisal from an expert in religious or ecclesiastical antiques or historical metalwork. Institutions like Heritage Auctions, Bonhams, or a regional antique bell or religious artifact specialist would be ideal.
