Brass Geisha Sculpture

Item Identification

  • Category: Asian Art
  • Medium: Brass
  • Subject: Traditional Japanese Geisha figure holding a stringed instrument (likely a shamisen).
  • Dimensions:
    • Height: 17.5 inches
    • Width: 7.5 inches
  • Distinguishing Marks: None observed.
  • Condition: Good.

Description

This is a brass sculpture of a Japanese geisha, intricately designed with ornate detailing on the kimono, hairstyle, and instrument. The sculpture is hollow, as evidenced by the bottom view, which indicates it was likely made using the lost-wax casting technique or a similar hollow casting process. The figure represents a traditional Japanese cultural theme, which has been a popular subject for decorative art in the 20th century.

Historical Context

  • Geisha Figures in Art: The geisha is a well-known cultural symbol of Japan, representing beauty, art, and tradition. Sculptures like these became popular in the mid-20th century as exports to Western markets during the post-war period when interest in Asian decor surged.
  • Hollow vs. Solid Sculptures:
    • Hollow: Brass sculptures are often hollow because it reduces material usage and weight, making them easier and more economical to produce. The hollow design does not necessarily lower the quality but indicates production efficiency.
    • Solid: Solid sculptures are heavier and more expensive to create, as they require more material. They are sometimes considered more valuable for their density and craftsmanship.

Market Value

The current market for brass Asian art is variable, influenced by factors such as:

  1. Provenance: The absence of a definitive date or maker reduces the value slightly.
  2. Condition: Your piece appears to be in good condition, which preserves its decorative appeal.
  3. Size: The substantial height of 17.5 inches adds value since larger sculptures are often more sought-after.
  4. Hollow Design: While hollow sculptures are less costly to produce, they remain valuable if the detailing and artistry are of high quality.

Comparable Sales:

  • Similar brass geisha sculptures (17-20 inches) from the mid-20th century generally sell for between $100 to $250 in today’s market, depending on condition and buyer interest.

Estimated Value

Based on the images, condition, and market comparisons:

  • Retail Value: $150 - $200
  • Auction Value: $100 - $150

Recommendations

  • If selling, present the sculpture as a decorative Japanese-inspired piece for collectors of Asian art or mid-century decor.
  • If possible, research further to identify any marks or maker’s stamps that could increase the value.

This is a beautiful and detailed piece of Asian-inspired decor that appeals to collectors and enthusiasts alike.
