Item:
Bronze Buddhist Dragon Bell with Striker and Lotus Base

Date Estimated: Circa 1920–1940

Origin: Likely East or Southeast Asia (possibly Thailand, Korea, or China based on style)

Material: Cast bronze with natural aged patina

Dimensions:

  • Height: 8 1/8 inches
  • Width: 6 3/4 inches
  • Weight: Approximately 2.6 lbs

Condition:
Excellent vintage condition – no cracks or breaks observed. Natural oxidation and patina are consistent with age. The chain, striker, and dragon handle are intact and original to the piece.

Distinguishing Features:

  • Ornately cast dragon handle, a common symbol of protection in East Asian cultures
  • Suspended striker (clapper) hanging from the dragon’s mouth
  • Detailed lotus flower motif on the base (symbolizing purity and enlightenment)
  • Bodhisattva or deity figure in flame halo motif (closely related to Buddhist temple iconography)
  • No foundry marks or inscriptions, suggesting artisan production rather than mass factory output

Cultural and Historical Context:

This style of bell is inspired by Korean and Chinese Buddhist temple bells used for ceremonial purposes, often representing the voice of the Buddha. These smaller versions were commonly made in the early 20th century for home shrines or as souvenirs during temple pilgrimages.

The casting style, dragon imagery, and symbolism suggest it may have been made for the tourist or export marketbetween World War I and World War II—a common practice especially in Japanese-occupied Korea and other parts of Asia.

Current Market Value Estimate:

  • Retail/Replacement Value: $150 – $250
  • Private Sale (Online Marketplaces): $100 – $175
  • Auction Estimate: $80 – $125

Similar bells of this size and design have recently sold on platforms like eBay, Etsy, and LiveAuctioneers in this price range depending on condition, patina, and detailing.

Selling Recommendations:

  • Highlight the detailed dragon handle, Buddhist symbolism, and unaltered patina
  • Photograph in natural light showing scale (as you’ve done with the ruler—well done)
  • Market to collectors of Asian art, Buddhica, or spiritual décor

Recommendation:

While a professional appraisal is not strictly necessary for a piece in this range, it may be worthwhile if grouped with other bronze artifacts or for insurance purposes in a larger Buddhist or Asian art collection.
