Distinguishing Features:
Cultural and Historical Context:
This style of bell is inspired by Korean and Chinese Buddhist temple bells used for ceremonial purposes, often representing the voice of the Buddha. These smaller versions were commonly made in the early 20th century for home shrines or as souvenirs during temple pilgrimages.
The casting style, dragon imagery, and symbolism suggest it may have been made for the tourist or export marketbetween World War I and World War II—a common practice especially in Japanese-occupied Korea and other parts of Asia.
