What it looks like to me, is a humidor for storing tobacco products such as cigars. EGW&S is the company E. G. Webster & Son of Brooklyn NY. The firm was in business from 1886-1928 and was purchased by International Silver Co. As for the value I am not sure

I'd go along with describing this item as a humidor . The EPNS means Electro-Plated Nickle-Silver . You might consider checking out cigar-related collector forums &/or vintage tobacco items on-line , to possibly find out more specifics . Cool little box ,LADAMS5864 .
