Description
Canadian Nickel Collection
A collection of Canadian Nickels
Note the change in metals from Silver to Nickel to Copper/Zinc to Steel to Nickel.
The wartime coinage 1942-1945 is of special interest, because of the need of Nickel in the munitions factories, Copper/Zinc was used than Steel. The design in 1943 included a "V" for Victory and incorporated "We win when we work willingly" in Morse code around the border of the coin.
Nickel coins made their reappearance in 1946-1951. In that year (1951) a coin commemorative of the 200th anniversary of the isolation of Nickel from other metals was stuck. From that date until 1954 the coins reverted to Steel because of the shortage of Nickel.
Finally, the collection includes the famous "Centennial" nickel with its reverse design of a rabbit, by Alex Colville.
