This is carved wood. I don't know what type of wood that it is. The top is some type of wood that sounds hollow when you knock on it. Most all of it was originally covered in gesso and gold leaf. Unfortunately, someone painted over it with gold paint. However, some of that paint is coming off and I can see the former gesso and gold leaf underneath. There is also some evidence of some other color on it in some places that appears to be possibly a blue/gray color. Otherwise it is in good condition. It is old but I don't know how old. I believe it could be Italian or French and possibly from the late 1800s. I do not know if it is an original or a reproduction. I don't know how to tell either. It is a Cupid with wings and a quiver of arrows on its back. It does not have a bow. It has a garment over its groin area and running down between its legs extending down between its feet. It is four pieces - a top attached to the Cupid which is then attached to a stand and that stand attached to the bottom base. There is currently an item on eBay that looks almost exactly like it with all four pieces together, which makes me believe that it was originally made that way. I have researched and can't find any other item just like on the internet or in books. It does have some cracks in the wood near the bottom of the legs that appears to be from age.
