Description

I want to know the Value of A gold Cellini Religious medal. I don't know how old it is? It was a gift to my 97 yr old grandma when she was a young girl. It is gold, but because it is so old it has a tarnished look to it. I was told that pieces like this belong in a Museum.

If this is truely a Benvenuto Cellini piece, its priceless, and can not be truely valued until it goes up for auction, and could fetch anywhere in the realm of tens of thousands to millions of dollars. I would heavily reccomend that you:

  1. Seek out the services of a professional appraiser to verify its authenticity and give you a ballpark estimate.
  2. Have the piece insured under its own policy.
  3. Invest in a security system and a large, bolted-down high-quality U.S.-made safe.

If these aren't financially viable for you, I would beg you for the sake of common human culture to donate or lease the piece to a large public museum, who will better be able to care for, protect, and display it. Leasing, rather than donating, would allow you to continue to own and control the piece once the lease expires, if you choose not to renew it. If a thief were to break into your home, they would likely take it to be melted down as they would not understand its artistic and antique value, and then fantastic piece of human history and culture would be lost forever. If you are concerned about getting the piece back from the museum should you need it, have a lawyer go over the lease agreement.

I don't know, I don't live in a big city to rent it out to and cannot travel. I don't know if it is an original, I don't know how to tell and don't know anybody where I live who can tell me. I do know it is very old, because my grandmother is 98 yrs. old.
