Chest - Nursery Painting

By sleepysilver, 16 September, 2012
Description

I was recently given a small chest (about 36" x 12" x 12" or so), with a painting on top of a child riding a horse. The paint has crackled over the years and faded, but is in rather good condition. The chest looks to be made of cedar. It also looks as though there used to be another painting on the front that has worn off over time. There are (copper?) straps and wooden handles. All in reasonably good condition. I would guess from the painting, it might be from the 30s? Any idea what I've got here?

Re: Chest - Nursery Painting

the painting appears to be decal, and may have been put on at a later date than the manufacture.   I would date it even a little later.based on the trim edging they used,  perhaps late 40's early 50's.  Its small size for a cedar chest or banket chest.  Price it around $75.

Re: Chest - Nursery Painting

Based on the images this pieces most likely dates from the late 1920's to early 30's. It's a mix of styles like most of these chest are, which also makes them appear older than they really are. Most like this one tend to sell for less than $150.00 at auction, unless the paited decoration is in very good condtion.
