Bought at an estate auction these chairs appear to be carved wood and carved jade in the center-back. There are cusions but I presume they are not original if the chairs are authentic.
One of the chair backs broke in a solid line along an area where there appeared to have been knot holes and other definciencies in the wood and it appears the piece was wood glued back on. I tool careful photos of the area showing the wood holes and knots and their line-up with the break. When I first saw it I was concened it was synthetic, but with the wood grain throughout and wood knots, etc, I am thinking it is at least natural wood and jade-like substance.
I appreciate any info anyone can offer. I bid against a Chinese couple known for buying antiques and bringing them back to China to sell. I paid just over $1000 for the pair. They reminded me of two "emporerers chairs" I had the prvelidge to sit in at the private collection of a famous Taiwanese artist's son's private collection, so I bid aggressively even though I was not sure what I was buying!
They are for my personal enjoyment so knowing the authenticity and story is more important than value, but if they are valuable I would like to know to get them insured!
