Colclough Tea Set

By dmbucher, 28 August, 2012
Description

This set was given to me by my Grandmother in 1981. It includes 5 cups & saucers, 5 dessert dishes, 1 serving plate, 1 creamer & 1 sugar bowl. The set is in very good condition, no chips at all. She said she bought it at an antique shop & it also had a teapot as part of the set; but she said it was broken while she was travelling to me. I never saw the teapot, as she said she wanted to keep it to try & find another one in an antique shop, as she frequented the shops in Charleston, SC. Unfortunately she never found one. I have never been able to find out anything about this set, & every dealer I have spoken to says they do not recognize the set. I would like to know when it was made, & of course any possible value. I would like to find the teapot or possibly other pieces as well. Thank you!

Re: Colclough Tea Set

This set is quite modern as these things go, it's unlikely it predates the 1950's, they certainly are not antique. Values tend to be very modest for sets with missing pieces, the main market for them is as individual pieces in the replacement market. At auction such partial sets often sell as part of boxlots for less than $20.00.

Re: Colclough Tea Set

I kind of find this hard to believe. My grandmother was an avid antique collector, leaving an exqusite collection upon her death. In addition, If the set is so 'common" why can't I find any pieces like it anywhere? I have even searched china sites in Great Britain to no avail. I realize my Carlton set is indeed common & I pretty much knew that & could find any piece I want anywhere. But I have never been able to find a single piece that matched this set & none with the gold stamp on the bottom...similar colors no exact matches. I have looked for 20 years. Since you are familiar with this china where can I buy more pieces that match exactly?

Re: Colclough Tea Set

Unfortunately, just because your family had a fine estate of nice (valuable?) items, Lovejoy is completely right on the value and rarity of these pieces. I am unsure why you have been able to find any information? A simple 30 second google search has provided me hundreds of results. Quite frankly, I don't want to spend thirty minutes searching for your specific pattern, but I can almost gurantee it shouldn't be too hard to find, certainly not 20 years worth of effort! Please don't take my comments as putting your piece down, but I don't see the confusion in value/rarity here- it was very easy to find similar works.
