Pair of Vintage Copper Watering Pitchers

Description:

This is a set of two vintage copper watering pitchers, both featuring hand-hammered textures. One has a traditional rounded can shape with a top loop handle and long narrow spout. The other is a tall, tapered, hammered copper vessel with a more sculptural, primitive design. Both pieces show natural verdigris patina (green oxidation), especially at the joints, which is typical of aged copper.

Materials & Craftsmanship:

  • Material: Solid copper
  • Craftsmanship: Hand-hammered body, soldered seams, riveted/attached handles
  • Patina: Verdigris present, suggesting age and authenticity

Markings:

  • One vessel includes a “Made in India” label on the underside. This suggests it may have been manufactured in the mid-20th century or later, likely for export.

Approximate Dimensions:

  • Rounded copper can: ~9" H x 11" L
  • Tapered hammered pitcher: ~8" W x 12" H
  • Weight: 10–12 oz each

Estimated Age:

  • Likely mid-20th century (1950s–1970s), possibly a bit earlier for the more heavily patinated one
  • These were commonly made in India for decorative or practical use in Western homes during that period

Condition:

  • Overall: Good
  • No major dents or cracks
  • Moderate oxidation consistent with age
  • Functional if cleaned, though currently more suited as dĂ©cor

Market Value Estimate (as of 2025):

  • Per Piece: $35 – $75 USD each
  • As a Set: $75 – $125 USD
  • Value depends on presentation, exact age, and buyer interest (especially in rustic/farmhouse/boho dĂ©cor markets)

These pieces are collectible but not rare. Their charm lies in their rustic aesthetic, handmade qualities, and the warmth of aged copper.

Recommendations:

  • If selling, list them on platforms like Etsy, eBay, or Chairish under “vintage copper watering can / pitcher / handmade India”
  • Clean lightly but do not polish away the patina unless your target buyer prefers bright copper (collectors usually prefer natural aging)
  • Consider a professional appraisal if you're uncertain of origin or if there are marks under residue that could indicate a more valuable maker
