Mahogany Dining Table with 5 Reupholstered Chairs

Report: Mahogany Dining Table with 5 Reupholstered Chairs
Category: Furniture
Estimated Date of Manufacture: Circa 1940s–1950s
Style: Colonial Revival / Chippendale Revival
Material: Genuine Mahogany (as verified by Mahogany Association, Inc. label)
Condition: Good, with some surface wear (notably watermarks on table)

Description and Identification:

This is a fine example of a mid-20th century mahogany dining suite in the Colonial Revival style, most likely manufactured in the United States between the 1940s and 1950s. The style is heavily influenced by earlier Chippendale design elements, as evidenced by the pierced splats, cabriole legs, and claw-and-ball feet on the chairs.

The Mahogany Association, Inc. label (label #139) confirms that all exposed structural components are constructed from genuine mahogany—a common and valuable practice from 1930s to 1960s to protect buyers from misleading wood claims.

The table features:

  • A double pedestal base
  • Two removable 10.5" extension leaves, extending it from 64” to 85” in total length
  • Overall dimensions (without extensions): 42"W x 64"L

The set includes 5 chairs, two of which are armchairs. Notably, the seats have been reupholstered but have preserved their original horsehair stuffing—a detail prized in antique preservation. The webbing and frame appear structurally sound from the images provided.

Condition Summary:

  • Wood Finish: Surface wear visible on tabletop, especially on one end (likely from water marks or prolonged use without protection). Minor polishing and conservation could restore uniform sheen.
  • Upholstery: Clean and updated, with historic integrity maintained (horsehair retained).
  • Structure: Appears stable and robust; joints seem tight; no obvious damage or repairs.
  • Label: Presence of the Mahogany Association label significantly supports authenticity and adds value.

Historical & Design Context:

This set would have been marketed to middle- or upper-middle-class families seeking quality and elegance in the postwar period. It reflects American furniture-making pride and craftsmanship. The double-pedestal base and carved chair details place it firmly in the tradition of Chippendale revival, a style that enjoyed widespread popularity during the mid-20th century.

Current Market Value Estimate (Retail):

  • Dining Table with leaves: $400–$700
  • Set of 5 chairs (2 armchairs, 3 side chairs): $600–$1,000
  • Total Estimate: $1,000–$1,700 (retail)
    • At auction or estate sale, expect closer to $700–$1,200 depending on buyer interest and local demand.

Recommendations:

  • Professional Refinishing: Light refinishing or restoration of the tabletop could significantly enhance value.
  • Professional Appraisal: For insurance or resale purposes, consult a Certified Appraiser from the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) or Appraisers Association of America (AAA).
  • Preservation Tip: Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or excessive humidity, which can affect mahogany coloration and finish.
