Dragon Inkwell

By scorder10, 14 October, 2015
Description

I got this inkwell (I think it's an inkwell, it could be a candle holder...) from my dad who got it from his dad.  We've been meaning to get it appraised.

The body of the dragon is some type of horn or bone.  The head is carved wood, and the feet and end of the tail are metal, possibly brass.  There is also a brass or metal collar around the neck. (The feet and tail are VERY dusty, I don't know the best way to clean them.)   I think it used to have a tongue sticking out, but the tip has broken off.  The eyes are glass.  Inside the head is a glass well that I can't get out, but it might have come out at one time.

My dad has always said it's an old inkwell that his dad got from an employer who traveled abroad a lot.  He doesn't know anything else about it.  It measures about 10 inches long.

I'm interested to know exactly what it is, how old it is, where it's from, and an insurance value.

Thank you!

Staci

History
Grandfather acquired it when my dad was little (probably around 1950) from an employer who got it somewhere overseas and had it in his collection. Not sure when my grandfather's employer acquired it. Not sure where it's from.
