George II Silver Tankard

By herby545, 18 February, 2013
Description

George II tankard London 1759 Robert Albin Cox

From base to top of thumb piece it measures 6.5 inches

From lip to widest part of handle 5.5 inches.

 Weight is 18 ozs

No dings or dents or signs of repair.

All stamps are well struck and readable in base and lid.

A slightly smaller rare tankard that is referred to as a ladies tankard of which many fewer were made.

Robert Albin Cox was apprenticed by Humprey Payne.

His works include a set of sugar tongs that were given to George Washington as a wedding gift.

This Tankard was made in the last year of George II  the same year as the deaths on the Plains of Abraham of the generals Wolfe and Montcalm, the birth of Robbie Burns and the opening of the Guiness Brewery. 1759 is thought of as the start of the great industrial revolution, the year the pope allowed the bible to be translated into english and the opening of the very first museum.
