Gudea Libation cup -caduceus-

By dennisherri, 19 January, 2011
Description

Hi I my name Dennis and im looking for some insight on an item me and my wife purchased. We have what is most often referred to as the" libation cup of Gudea".It was purchased as part of an estate with many Egyptian antiquities. We have searched for weeks on information and can only trace this piece to the Louvre museum in Paris from an article in 1999. Im sure this would be a reproduction but i cant find it anywhere on the net. our piece appears to made of soapstone as the original states.http://www.mazzaroth.com/ChapterThree/TowerOfBabel.htm that image is exact to ours. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We would like to know if this piece is still in the Louvre and it was replicated in soapstone the link is for the one in the Louvre

Re: Gudea Libation cup -caduceus-

Hi Dennis I too have the same vase and i cannot find any info anywhere i wonder if it is possible that there could be more than one original?......I have ruled out so many different replicas and i am at a dead end....i will have it checked for age at some point ...let me know if you find anyt info and i will do the same....the story behind this one is very interesting....it was found built into the walls of a over 200 year old barn in Massachucettes family members where disasembling the barn for the antique wood thats how it was found.

Re: Gudea Libation cup -caduceus-

interesting fact I found out was Iraq demanded all of its artifacts returned and around the same time many artifacts were stolen in iraq as museums and such were being destroyed.Mine was bought at an estate sale of a person that was in Iraq at the time..I have matched mine with pictures from the louver museum and even the green tinge marks match up.Its a really neat piece when you do the research on it..let me know if you find out anything.
