Hi, I know it's been over a month so I am not sure if you still need this info, but usually items that are sterling are marked with a 925, some countries 800 (it just denotes the amount of pure silver) or it will say sterling. If it doesn't have any of those marks that doesn't always mean it isn't sterling vs. plate, but it is one clue. One of the sites you can go to that I use for hallmarks, is http://www.silvercollection.it/index.html this site has silver and silver plate made in the USA and England, and they have category’s for plate and sterling as well as searching the hallmarks/maker by name or by picture i.e. anchor, crown, griffin, etc. It's a very busy site in terms of stuff everywhere on it, but if you take a few minutes and pick the categories you need it has a lot of info on makers. At least it has helped me. Another thing you can do is Goggle Silver tray, grapes, vines, (whatever else pattern is on there) and the hallmarks that you know for sure what they are like the crown, the letter E etc. Or take it to an antique dealer that sells silver and ask them to tell you what it is.

Hope that helps.

This one is silver plated, it uses what's called "psuedo hallmarks" here is an article about them:
