Hand Carved Secretary Desk

By pgadams, 14 June, 2013
Description

I received this piece from my grandmothers estate in 1992. She had it in her home for as long as I can remember, however, no one seems to know its origin. She lived in her parents home after they passed so we're not sure if it was hers or her parents. Some family believe it was brought over to Canada when the family immigrated from Russia in the mid 1800's. Another family member believes it may have been hand made by my great grandfather, however, upon closer inspection, there is a signature on the back of the desk which is not my great grandfathers. Because it has sentimental value, I am not interested in selling, however, I am curious if there's any history attached to this piece, it's age, and approximate value.

The desk has a simple layout with hand carved designs at the top of the desk, centre of the door, and below the door. I included pictures of the lock and hardware and close up of the hand carved designs as well as the side, bottom shelf and feet. Hopefully, someone can tell me a little bit about when it was made and approximate value.  Thank you.
