Description I am not a collector, however I found this at a yard sale and loved the colors. I would like to know, besides value, what this piece is. Should it have a lid? It looks like a small planter to me. Perusing books and internet, I have not seen anything similar other than the larger ferners. From my research I believe it is authentic Nippon. There is wearing of the gold at each corner as indicated in the photos but it is free of cracks and chips. Any information on this piece would be wonderful.

Nippon means Japan in Japanese.The maker is Noritake. An "M" standing for "Morimura" in a wreath, crowned by "Hand painted" and below, NIPPON. The mark introduced in 1911 and possibly in use until 1921. Noritake first produced dinnerware for the American market in 1914. This is probably 1920 ish. Pretty.

Thank you for dating this for me. Do you know if it is considered a planter or maybe just an ornamental box? Have you seen others similar to it in shape and size. It seems small for a planter or ferner.
