Item Description and History:

This original oil painting by the late American artist John Luini captures a serene coastal harbor scene. The work features two moored fishing boats beside a wooden dock with buildings lit by a warm, glowing sunset. The sky is rendered in romantic hues of pink and orange, with delicate reflections mirrored in the calm waters below. The dock scene is populated with fine details such as mooring lines, figures, and rigging—elements typical of Luini’s picturesque maritime compositions.

John Luini, who passed away in 2002, was known for painting seascapes and harbor views. While he is not considered a widely known or listed artist in major auction databases, his paintings are appreciated among collectors of coastal and Americana art. Works attributed to Luini are commonly found in regional art markets, estate sales, and vintage shops.

The canvas is unframed but well-stretched and wired for hanging, with painting continuing onto the right edge—indicating that it was likely designed to be displayed without a frame. The back is clean, showing signs of age but no apparent damage.

Market and Valuation:

Estimated Current Market Value:
Based on comparable sales and the secondary art market (e.g., eBay, Etsy, and regional auctions), paintings by John Luini of this size and quality typically range between:

  • $75 to $200 USD (approx. $100 to $270 CAD) for unframed works in good condition.

The atmospheric quality and strong use of color may appeal to collectors of coastal art, increasing its desirability for décor purposes as well.

Recommendation:

If you are looking to sell this piece, platforms like eBay, Etsy, Chairish, or local art/antique fairs would be appropriate. When listing, highlight:

  • The artist's name and death year (2002),
  • The hand-painted oil medium,
  • The atmospheric harbor theme,
  • Its vintage condition and signature.

If a higher valuation or more detailed provenance is desired, a professional appraisal from a certified art appraiser or regional auction house may help establish its potential in higher-end markets—especially if further documentation on the artist’s career or exhibition history can be uncovered.
