Hinged Wooden Box Chest with center front opening for tools? machinest? chemist?

Description

This is wooden hinged box and I have no idea what it was used for. It has unique interior compartments fitted with small dowels - to hang things I guess? It also has a small isolated compartment in the front of the box - no idea what this was for. The box has no markings so I assume it was custom made.
