That's a beautfiul set of porcelain! That's crazy it got lost for years.

I bought a set of dishes just like that last year (only with scalloped edges) so I did a little research.

It's known as Rose medallion and dates from the mid-19th century, produced mainly for export (called "export ware"). Since it doesn't have a makring on the bottom it's pre-1890 (afterwards it was marked "made in China" or "China").

The pattern was very popular. General Grant and his wife had a set before he was elected president. I also read that it was the kind of serving set for lunch rather than dinner. It was produced into the early 20th century, but the quality declined. I've seen some sad examples in stores where the color isn't as vibrant and the detail clumsy.

The blending of Chinese and European designs in Chinese porcelain decoration began in the mid-18th century, including the famille rose, then advanced to this pattern which is even more elaborate.

Yours looks to be of high quality. I'm not an appraiser so I can't cite a value.

Enjoy!
