This cupboard measures approximately 6' x 6'... it is in 4 pieces: base, left & right side with mirrors and shelves, center section doors open from left to one large open area.
It has 2 sayings hand carved in the center in what appears to be Old English. The first is Thomas Wyatt's Of Dissembling Words. "Throughout the world if it were sought, fair words enough a man shall find; they be good cheap, they cost right nought, their substance is but only wind, but well they say and so to mean, that sweet accord is seldom seen." Next appears the date 1575, then a Latin saying: Sutor ne ultra crepidam... (let not the shoemaker judge beyond his last, a rebuke).
ThereĀ is some obvious wear on the front trim and part of one side is in need of repair in the back. The mirrors obviously have been replaced over the years but the overall workmanship of the piece is exquisite. We have made no attempt to clean the piece to date.
We are desparately searching to identify the country of origin and value.. certainly would love to see offers for sale, but more than anything to identify the origin.
The center wood is hand inlaid pieces as are the center bottom six sections.
