Leather basket. Saddle bag? Native American?

Description

Need help! What is it? All hand scraped animal hide. Hand forged iron loop closure. Weathered top. Diamond patterned hand cut leather decoration. Oak wood sticks support lid. Burned wood ends. Looks field made. Why the decoration for such a utility basket?

Mexican war saddle bag is my guess. Metal clasp is confusing me. European?
