This chair has been in my family for a very long time. It would have been purchased in New York City either between 1898 and 1904 or else in the very early 1920's. I'm not sure if it bought when my Great-Grandparents came to America or if it was purchased when my Grandparents married.
The wood is mahogony and hand carved. There are lion's' paws feet and the back and arms have lion's heads. The upholstery in the pictures is not the original. The upholstery you see was done between 1958 and 1963. The original upholstery was an aquamarine silk.
I have heard the style of chair referred to as cerrule, savonarola, and x-frame. Though some of these styles are folding chairs, this chair is not.
I would appreciate any information anyone may have on my chair.
Thanks,
Gwen
