Meissen Vase

By tropicaldreaming, 22 November, 2008
Description

I bought this at an exclusive estate sale. It had belonged to the woman's mother who passed away several years ago at age 100 and it had been handed down to her mother when her mother was young.

I listed it in excellent condition, which it is, except for one place on top of the handle where there had been a cherub that had gotten broken off leaving only it's tiny legs. I do not have the missing piece. But other then that, this vase is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips and the paint and glaze are excellent.

On the handle is a half man half horse or something, and on the other side, under the very beautifully shaped spout, is a cherub riding a horse that is half horse, half mermaid or sea creature, as it's hind end spilts on each side into the fish-like tail.

The middle is covered with cherubs with dolphin type fish, while below that are 3 naked half woman half mermaid type figures that have their arms intertwined as if they were holding up the vase.

The details on this are just amazing escpecially on the little faces. They are so detailed that they almost look real.

On the bottom is the Meissen blue crossed swords and by one of the sword's handles is a blue letter or something that looks like an M.

I have searched for a Meissen like this, and I found one similar, but it was no as elaborate as this one, but the cherubs were identical in their faces and hair styles, and in an Antiques Roadshow Book, it said that in the late 19th century, Meissen and others, had hair in "wavy-low-brow" style, which I believe is what these cherubs have.

So with all that, the crossed blue swords, the identical cherubs on a Roadshow Meissen, and the woman who's mother this belonged to told me it was Meissen, i truly believe it is a Meissen. But I am far from an expert and I would greatly appreciate any information on it.

Thank you !!!

Re: Meissen Vase

Your piece is beautiful, but the mark is questionable.

Re: Meissen Vase

Hi, ..Thank you so much for your comments, and I wish I could show you all the pictures i have of it, because some of the close-up details, like the gorgeous swirled up leaf type design behind the handle. But that is what really made me want other's opinions and knowledge about this. i had looked at those marks before that you linked me to when I was searching, and i thought if it wasn't Meissen, it might be Dresden by Meyers, because somewhere I read that it was around the late 19th century that they started using pastel colors with a pale pinkish background like this one, plus the cherubs hair styles were used around the late 19th century too.  And out of all the marks I have found, it resembles the Dresden mark the closet with the curved or bowed swords with the little handle marks and if the swords and the M mark were not put on as one, it could be that the M got offset a little when it was put on and if that might have been the case, or could have happened like that, I think it could very well be Dresden as the marks are so close, and if you could see the mark on mine clearer, you could see the similarities in the M marks.  Do you think that might be a possibility??.......Thank you again !!!....Diane
