Re: MERIDEN B CO. INTERNATIONALS CO 1316 CANTEEN

This actually a "Hip flask" rather than a canteen, the flask itself is likely silver plate, the cap Sterling.I would have the flask tested as the Sterling silver examples sell for more than the silver plated variety. At auction the Sterling examples sell in the $100.00- $300.00 range the silver plate ones $25-45.00 .

Re: MERIDEN B CO. INTERNATIONALS CO 1316 CANTEEN

Hi,

I think that LOVEJOYS  feeling that this is NOT silver is incorrect. I was doing some research on this Company a little while ago and found the following article.

I would suggest that it is silver and that LOVEJOYS valuation of 100 to 300 dollars is correct.

It is important not to clean it with metal polishes only use a moist or dry cleaning cloth. It will go black and tarnished but this is natuaral.

I am please that you are not planning to sell it as beautiful things should be kept and enjoyed. Smile

Meriden B Company, was a manufacturer that made silver ware out of "black silver" the kind of silver that was economical doing the time, it still had the flare of expensive silver settings and today the silver along is of high value, since refined silver was getting high in value and the price of refined silver was costly at the time, Meriden B Company started offering silver that was not "refined" before it was marked, it was before "nickle silver" so the silver is still 100 percent!

The product it self will appear black before you polish it, which should be left in that state if you want to sell it. All Meriden B Company is over 100 years old and have a historical value, family's that can trace back 100 year will know about the Meriden B Company product.

Meriden B Company went out of business after becoming well known for these kinds of products.

The Meriden Britannia Co. became part of International Silver in 1898, but some of their marks were used into the 1930's.

Re: MERIDEN B CO. INTERNATIONALS CO 1316 CANTEEN

Thanks for the info. I just started researching the origen of a mongrammed coffee urn from Meriden B. Compnay. It's dated 1887 under the mark and scales but the monogram is ornate script with either "MSS" or "MLL" over "New Year 1873".

It's a beautiful piece and I'd like to know the value and the origen. Any assistance would be appreciated.
