Description

I bought this mask 40 years ago in a shop in Los Angeles that sold miscellaneous vintage items.  The only thing the owner could tell me was that it was purchased from someone who told her he had brought it up from Mexico.

It is about 10 inches by 6 inches.  It is covered in what appears to be an animal fur similar to squirrel's fur and has what looks to be a horse hair beard.  The mass of tangled shoe laces on the back of the mask is exactly as I bought it 40 years ago.  It is carved from a fairly light weight wood.

I have wondered for decades if the mask was actually used, or if it was created as a tourist trinket.  Any information about the piece would be appreciated.
