My husband and I got this at an estate sale and are looking for an estimated value of the map.
Here is what I know so far and condition:
- "Together with Maps of Thirty-Two of the Principal Cities and Towns in the Union"
- Published by S. Augustus Mitchel - Philadelphia
- Drawn by J.H. Young
- Engraved by J.H. Brightly
- 1840 Population by State County
- Wall Map: 49 inch width, 40 inch height
- Includes Wooden Roll on bottom: 54 inch length
- Shows "Indian Territory"
- Canvas back
- Water Damage on the top 1/3 of map and left side
- Some cracks in paper but no areas missing
This is not something we would typically purchase but fell in love with it due to its history and topic.
If you have any idea on value that would be excellent!
Re: Mitchell's National Map of the American Republic of...
Aloha...tha tis an antique school chart....they were varnished and used for decades...Mitchell was a popular mapmaker from 1840's until 1870's...unfortunately it has a lot of water damage and the varnish used at the time makes it crack and yellow...it's hard to ascertain a realistic value...but if you can get a few hundred bucks for it...then you should take it because it will cost $200-$400 to restore it so you could sell it at auction...and that has some risk to it...auctioneers usually want it restored and in nice condition...hope this helps...email me for more info
