Mystery wooden object-any ideas what this is?

Description

This is a mystery wooden object, perhaps a household or commercial tool,it looks too delicate for industial use, made of wood,spring loaded plungers either end with red coloured lining on the plunger faces. It splits into two halves. 

Can anyone suggest what it might be? Is it a common item, does it have a value?

I believe you have a nice wood seal stamp....the metal seal would be placed in the bottom and the paper or document placed betwen the two pieces, press it together and you have an imprint of the seal.  Probaby dates to mid to late 19th C.  Wax seals were used earlier...I'm .not sure of the value...
