Old Antique Dagger maybe from a pirate

Description

This old dagger passed down from an east coast US sea captain. Our family does not have a tale to tell about this item but we are curious as to its provenance. Would any of you know about how old or what part of the country this was made. We think its made of brass and what is rusted steel.
