Old Carving

Found in a cleanup winter of 2010 in Libby Montana. It was nailed to the outside of a house on a porch of an 87 year old man who passed away that winter. The man served overseas in World War 2 according to paperwork in the residence. The squirels chewed on the hutand there area few cracks as you can see in the photos. I hope you can help us figure out what this is. We just love it. Thank you, Troy and Jenn.
