Description

Volume 1 Issue 1 of the "Summer Edition" of Treasure Chest issued in 1966. It is my understanding this was available by subscription only and there were six issued throughout the summer.

This issue has a stain on the front cover approx., 1/3 from bottom and to right of center. The crossword puzzle, etc, on the inside of the front cover has been completed and the puzzle on the inside back has as well. In addition, there is writing at the top of that page. Otherwise, the book is in very good condition. Curiosity around potential value?

Treasure Chest of Fun & Fact – Summer Edition
Vol. 1, No. 1 – June 23, 1966
Published by George A. Pflaum, Dayton, Ohio

Description & History:

Treasure Chest was a Catholic-themed educational comic book distributed mainly through parochial schools from 1946 to 1972. The Summer Edition was a unique subscription-only series released outside the regular school year. This 1966 issue marks the debut of that short-lived summer series.

It features science fiction adventure stories (e.g., “A Journey to the Moon”), educational content (like crossword puzzles and historical features), and was part of a special six-issue run. This edition was particularly forward-looking with its multiracial cast in a futuristic moon mission—an impressive concept in 1966.

Condition (as shown in photos):

  • Front cover: noticeable stain right of center, about 1/3 from the bottom.
  • Interior: puzzles have been completed, and there's handwriting (“Mary loves this page”) at the top of one page.
  • Back cover and spine: in relatively good shape, with light wear.
  • Overall condition: Good (Reader Copy) due to the writing and staining, which affects collectibility.

Estimated Value (2024):

For collectors of religious or educational comics, Treasure Chest holds niche interest.

  • Near Mint copies of this specific issue can range from $40–$80 USD.
  • Your copy, due to writing and condition, would likely appraise between $15–$25 USD.
  • Its value could increase slightly due to its historical significance as Vol. 1, No. 1 of a unique short series.

Recommendation:

If you're not looking to sell, it still has great sentimental and educational value, especially as a family piece. However, if you ever do, I’d recommend bundling this with other Treasure Chest issues or 1960s educational comics for a themed lot sale.

For a precise valuation—especially if you plan to insure, auction, or sell—I recommend a professional comic appraiser or grading service like CGC (though CGC grading may not be worth it for this issue unless pristine).
