Re: Is this paining by William James Müller (28 June 1812 – 8...
I'd actually have to see it.It definitely looks like Muller's work. Museums and such are cagey about showing artist signatures to inhibit counterfiting. But, that also seems familiar... But signatures can change over time, and are never identical anyway. The colors look dark, which is normal as older paintings collect dust. A good conservator could get it bright looking again.First off, what auction? Did they say it was a genuine Muller?Second, is it on canvas? Board? Canvas over board?I have seen similar texturing on old canvases glued to boards and these are usually reprints or hand painted copies. Can you see any sign of difinitive brush strokes? But in the end it is absolutely impossbile to tell. And I am an artist and took art history in college. From what I see though, you'd be doing yourself a favor and look up the nearest art appraiser. Pack it up very carefully, and watch his or her face as you show it to them. That will tell you right off.

Thank you so much for your reply. I bought it on a small auction on a flea market and half of the time they did not know what they had, they just refered to it as an old painting and I bought it in Denmark. I attached more pictures for you to see and you can see brush strokes and its on canvas too, let me know what you think, Dario
