"Royal Satsuma" was made in China, not Japan were genuine Satsuma was produced. Pieces with this mark are quite modern generally no earlier than the 1980's. At auction pieces like this often sell for less than $50.00.

Thank you for your help. I paid 100.00 for it at Goodwill, and after I got home and researched the markings, I believed that it was likely not what I had hoped it was.

Some Goodwills have cranked prices up to rediculous levels this past couple of years. Some items , particularly anything out of the ordinary looking, marked up far above their actual value.

I agree; sometimes I find things in their case that they have researched well.  In this case, not so much and I didn't take my iPad with me that day. 

If the marking had said Satsuma, with just some Japanese lettering, I'd have perhaps been looking at something special; not this time, though.
