Rustic Winter Scene Painting

By yulianel, 18 April, 2025
Description

This is a vintage painting in a monochrome sepia palette with barn, trees and a wooden fence.

I think it is from 1970s-1990s.

It is signed DAGNALL, but the only Dagnall I managed to find is Peggy Dagnall who used a different palette in her works, so could not recognize the artist.

Think it is oil on canvas, has multilayered frame.

Muted sepia, rustic Americana.

Was purchased at thrift store.

Rustic Winter Scene Painting

  • Artist: Signed "Dagnall" (likely a reference to Peggy Dagnall, though this piece uses a different palette than her known works)
  • Medium: Oil on canvas (likely, based on the texture and finish)
  • Frame: Multi-layered frame
  • Condition: Good
  • Dimensions:
    • With frame: 12.75" by 10.75"
    • Without frame: 9.6" by 7.6"
  • Palette: Monochrome sepia tones
  • Period: Likely created between the 1970s and 1990s

Description:

This painting depicts a rustic Americana scene, featuring a barn, trees, and a wooden fence set in a winter landscape. The use of muted sepia tones gives it a nostalgic and subdued aesthetic, typical of winter scenes. The style suggests an intention to evoke a serene, rustic atmosphere.

Signature:

  • The piece is signed "Dagnall," which may refer to the artist Peggy Dagnall, although it’s unclear if this is the same individual due to the different color palettes used in her other known works. Given the style and the palette used in this painting, it could be a different artist with the same name or an artist influenced by Dagnall's work.

Provenance:

  • Purchased at a thrift store for 5 CAD, this painting likely belongs to a group of affordable vintage art pieces from the 1970s-1990s. Its rustic theme fits well with the period and reflects the general interest in Americana during that time.

Current Value:

  • Estimated Value: This painting, given its small size, vintage status, and use of a monochromatic palette, likely has a modest market value. Based on its condition and style, the value could range between $30 to $100 USD, depending on the provenance and further verification of the artist’s identity.
  • Potential for Increase in Value: If the artist is identified as being more notable (or associated with a higher-profile gallery or exhibition), the value could increase, especially if there is a trend toward rustic Americana or winter-themed paintings in the art market.

Recommendations:

  • Professional Appraisal: If you are looking for a more accurate assessment of the value or suspect the artist’s identity might increase its value, it would be wise to seek a professional appraisal. A professional appraiser can also help verify the artist's identity and provide a detailed history of the painting's provenance.
  • Care: To maintain the painting’s condition, keep it away from direct sunlight and ensure it is framed in a way that protects the canvas and oil paint from damage over time.
