Serpentine style chest of drawers

By pome28, 27 June, 2013
Description

I am looking to get an estimate value of this chest of drawers. I just recently learned it was a possible antique. I have done a little research but dont know enough about antiques to find its worth. I believe it is mahogany wood & the inner 4 drawers to be made of pine. It is very heavy! It has a bowed front. The drawers are made with a dovetail construction & are only about 4" deep. It is overall in pretty good shape with only a few blemishes here & there. The only markings I can find on it (I've looked it over thoroughly!) are as follows: On the back in the upper right corner the numbers 4 5 62 is stamped on it with 2200 stamped below that. Then again on the back, in the upper left corner, the number 787 is hand written in some type of black ink or maybe wax pencil. In the upper most left corner (again on the back) it looks as though there used to be a label at some point. there is only a small bit of a possible label left & looks like it was secured to the back with industrial type staples. I was going to sell this as a regular piece of furniture for dirt cheap until an individual was nice enough to inform me that I may have an antique worth alot more than what I was selling at. I may still be interested in selling it but need to know a good price range as I have no idea what it is valued at

Re: Serpentine style chest of drawers

It's not an antique, but the style is based on pieces originally made 1780-1820. Base on what I can see in the images, the "62" marking is most likely  the date of manufacture. In good condition we retail comparable pieces for about $350.00, at auction they often sell for less tahn $100.00.

Glad to be able to help. It's always a good idea to check these things out, like you say, it does put your mind at ease when it comes time to sell.
