Description

This is a gold-filled brooch I bought from an online auction.  It is supposed to be made in Italy between 1860-1890.  Just checking on value for my own information.  Information on the value would be greatly appreciated.

  Thank you,

Lisa

Detailed Description & Authentication:

Cameo Carving:

This is a hand-carved shell cameo, as evidenced by:

  • The natural curvature and color striations of the shell
  • The translucent glow when backlit (see photo #1)
  • The precise undercut relief and depth of the figures, which suggests careful craftsmanship

The subject appears to feature three figures—two male and one female—dressed in classical or Renaissance-style robes with a building or castle backdrop. This type of narrative imagery is consistent with mid-to-late 19th century Italian cameos, often inspired by mythology, religion, or romantic historical themes.

Setting and Mount:

  • The gold-colored frame is elaborately molded in a Victorian Rococo Revival style, common between 1850–1890.
  • Likely gold-filled (rolled gold plate), as stated, or possibly low-karat (9K–12K) gold. A professional test would confirm.
  • The clasp and pin are consistent with the era—a C-style clasp and hinged pin extending beyond the brooch edge, which further supports a date of circa 1860–1890.

Glue and Backing:

The visible brown adhesive or resin on the back is unusual but not unheard of in 19th-century cameos. It may have been added later to stabilize or reseat the shell within its setting, possibly due to loosening over time. While it slightly affects desirability to collectors, it doesn’t detract heavily from the value unless it indicates a repair.

Current Market Value Estimate:

Type

Estimated Value (USD)

Retail/Antique Dealer

$400 – $750

Auction/Online Marketplace

$275 – $500

Insurance Replacement Value

~$750

Given the size, level of carving detail, and intact condition, your $265 purchase was quite good—likely under fair market value.

Recommendations:

  1. Authentication (Optional but Helpful):
    • Consider taking it to a qualified antique jewelry appraiser or gemologist to test the setting (for karat content) and confirm the period.
    • A local jeweler with antique expertise can test the metal and give a second opinion on age.
  2. Storage & Care:
    • Avoid exposing to water or solvents due to the natural shell and glue backing.
    • Store in a soft, dry container to prevent shell cracking.
  3. Insurance:
    • If insuring, consider a declared value around $750 to reflect retail replacement cost.

Conclusion:

This is a finely carved, authentic Victorian-era Italian shell cameo brooch, likely dating to between 1860 and 1890. It features rich historical imagery and is housed in a gold-filled period-appropriate frame. The carving quality and backlight translucency confirm it is not a modern resin reproduction. The price you paid ($265) reflects a below-market acquisition, especially if the setting tests as solid gold.
