What's interesting here is the title. There is an artist that lived within your given time frame, and he painted an oil titled "The Stone Mason". His name is Diego Rivera,  and this is his website. However, the paintings are not the same - and yet, they have remarkable similarities. You say there is a signature, is it readable? Even partly?

the signature resembles a Dr's signature.  it is clearly visible but readable is another question.  it is in the lower right hand corner just under the picture, opposite the title.
