Victorian Carved Sofa

By mariascott113, 15 June, 2008
Description

Sofa, victorian era I believe.  Would like to know the style, area of origin, approximate age and estimated value.  Was inherited from Grandmother through great aunt, the family history is that it was her great grandmother's from Richmond, Virginia around the civil war era.

I remember it in her apartment in Pennsylvania, was in red velvet with tufted back.  Later re-upholstered - in need again.  Carvings on back appear to be Fleur de Lis.  One in center and one at top of each curved side.  Wood may be rosewood, but uncertain.  Wood never refinished.  Has original wooden wheels on curved legs.  Arms have wooden fronts down to the legs, but tops are upholstered.  Widest part at top of back is 74", seat is 54".  Center of back is 36".  No emblishment on front lower, except two carved curls about a foot in on each side.

Re: Victorian Carved Sofa

This is a Victorian Rococo Revival piece, they were all the rage until the 1990's, but demand for such pieces has dropped dramatically in recent years. While not mass produced in the modern sense of the term, they were made in huge numbers from the 1850's through the 1870's. Today these often go at auction for less than $250.00.
