Large Victorian inkwell measures about 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" x about 4" tall & weighs over 1-1/4 pound. It's made of clear glass with emerald green highlights & has a two-piece, hinged lid made of sterling silver. The initials "AES" (I think) are engraved in fancy, scrolling letters on the top of the lid.
The lid is marked with the number "7" on the underside of the top piece, next to the hinge & it bears the following British hallmarks:
Maker's Mark: Mappin Bros
Silver Standard Mark: Lion Passant
City Mark = Uncrowned Leopard's Head
Date Letter = e (1900)
There are no markings on the glass that I can see.
The piece shows some minor wear, but it's in great shape for it's age. It has a couple minor dings & two tiny chips on the raised (or ribbed) portions of the glass & the top of the lid has a dent (or ding) right in the middle that I can't see, but I can feel it when I run my finger across it. None of these flaws are noticeable when just looking at the piece. I've had it displayed in a curio cabinet in my living room for several years & didn't notice them until I actually inspected it for flaws. There are also some scratches on the inside of the domed lid.
