Item Description:
This is an original 1962 Bubblecut Barbie doll with raven black hair, blue eyes, and painted features. She has pierced ear holes (without earrings), painted fingernails and toenails, and is marked on the right buttock and foot with authentic Mattel mold stamps. The doll is dressed in a mint green Southern Belle–style gown, likely handmade by the original owner's grandmother, and includes a navy blue hand-crocheted stole.

Manufacturer & Markings:

  • Manufacturer: Mattel, Inc.
  • Mold Markings:
    • Right cheek/buttocks:
      “Midge TM ©1962 / Barbie ©1958 / by Mattel, Inc. / Patented”
    • Foot: “Japan” (horizontal orientation on the right foot)

These markings match second-generation Barbie dolls made between 1962 and 1964

Features:

  • Hair: Raven Bubblecut hairstyle, well-preserved
  • Face: Pale complexion, high-color lips, and brows intact
  • Body: Barbie/Midge body type with straight arms and legs (no bend-legs)
  • Clothing: Custom-made vintage gown (Southern belle style) in tulle and lace; beautifully constructed with matching petticoat and rear snap; includes original satin bow in hair and a crocheted shawl

Condition:

  • Doll: Excellent – no cracks or greening, tight limbs, minimal facial fading
  • Hair: Full, well-styled bubblecut in raven
  • Dress: Excellent condition – no visible stains, tears, or fading
  • Accessories: Homemade, clean, and presentable; adds sentimental and display value

Stored in a smoke-free, pet-free home, which positively affects both preservation and resale value.

Historical Context:

The Bubblecut Barbie replaced the original ponytail Barbie style in 1961. Raven hair is less common than blonde or brunette, which enhances desirability among collectors. The hand-crafted gown, while not a Mattel original, showcases mid-century homemade doll fashion, often prized by collectors who appreciate the artistry of early doll collectors and seamstresses.

Recommendations:

  • You do not require a professional appraisal unless you plan to insure a larger vintage Barbie collection or sell as part of an estate.
  • Keep the doll and clothes out of sunlight and store her upright to preserve condition.
  • You could enhance auction/sale value by noting that the dress was handmade by a 98-year-old grandmother and showcasing the craftsmanship in the listing.
