Description

Bought this from a young couple recently. Needs repairs and wondering if its worth what I will have to put into it. Not much is known about it but the girl claimed its at least 80 years old but that seemed unlikely to me at the time. Her late grandfather was given this as a gift from his wife. The chess board flips over as a backgammon board. The chess pieces came with it and the two sides open for storage of the pieces. Both sides that open have a dark black color inlay. I would appreciate any info anyone could give! Thank you all!

Category Furniture
Medium wood? not sure about board, inlay on each side that opens for storage or chess pieces.
Distinguishing marks spiral table legs
Condition Good
Size and dimensions of this item 30.5 height, length of table 31 and 20 wide
Date Period unknown told its at least 80 years old to the sellers knowledge but have also been told its from the 80s here but with no other info like who made them.
History Girl I bought it from said her grandfather was given this as a gift from his wife when they were married and she estimates it to be at least 80 years old. I was told by someone else looking at the pics that its from the 80s instead. Would like to know who the maker is if possible as well what the chess board and inlays are made of..

Your’s is similar to a Theodore Alexander Spiral Turned Games Table like these https://www.ebay.com/itm/Theodore-Alexander-5200-002BN-Spiral-Turned-Games-Table-Chess-Backgammon/273505578244?hash=item3fae33ed04:g:TuAAAOSw8m5bwLwb https://www.theodorealexander.com/product-detail/5200-002BN To my eyes those look a lot richer/finer but I’m no expert. My guess is yours is based on that style. Since I’m not an expert I won’t advise on restoring or refinishing. Hopefully @Lovejoy will see your post and give you a better idea of what you have. I checked the sold items on eBay and found one of the Theodore Alexander ones that sold. It was best offer so below the price shown https://www.ebay.com/itm/32417EC-THEODORE-ALEXANDER-Reversible-Top-Chess-Backgammon-Games-Table-/274614227092?hash=item3ff0489094%3Ag%3AQG4AAOSwSF5f2TS2&nma=true&si=AWklQ2B4kQxk3q1DHEnRZRug25M%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Some really good pics there.

Yes, they are a lot alike but the Theodore looks much fancier than mine in some ways but im not sure. Thank you for sharing this as it did give me some style info like that the style is called a William and Mary Spiral I think so this is a good place for me to start. I see this company began production in the 90s. The girl believed it to be at least 80 years old but I dont know if she is correct or not on the age. Thank you again for all your help! I added a few more pics.
