Well folks, my wife purchased this piece to repurpose toward interior design. After looking more closely at the contruction there were some indications that it could be more valuable than we initially thought.
Well, all we are certain of is that it IS a small brass trimmed wooden box and a (size matching) stand. It appears to us that someone might have made a partial (failed) effort to restore the box judging from the colors and stain patterns.
Most closely resembles construction style of asian camphor wood boxes but lacks both handles and locks, I am without skills to identify wood but this should be more immediately obvious to this esteemed forum of experts thus I am reaching out for expert opinion to determine the type and value of the peice before making plans to refinish and or repurpose it as a decent flea market find. Could have been a high school project for all we know, thus we ask - what is it?
We are not certain of any history on this piece but it appears slightly pinkish in color on exterior, dark brown on interior and it has very little distinctive odor but not a cedar type odor.
Brass appears to be original with naturally aged patina and very consistent throughout the piece.
No lock although a broken hasp and hook are present front center however screws used in that appear modern - small flathead with machined threads that extend almost to head of screw.
Hinge screws are also flathead but these are distinctly smaller gap in flathead - unable to unscrew them yet - need a smaller tool.
Stand is (in) 20.5L x 11W x 10H
1.5 lb stand

Re: Wooden Chest
I failed to uplaod interior photos but it's chocolate brown in color and unsual in that the three boards of the bottom are separated by something that functions similar to grout and has aged and crumbled. Also the boards are variable widths and two are significantly tapered in width at a rate of about 1/4 to 1/2 in across the length of only 20 inches.
